Who We Are
The Carole Kneeland Project for Responsible Journalism was founded in 1998, in tribute to an extraordinary individual, Carole Kent Kneeland, whose courage, passion and sense of fairness far surpassed her time on earth. Her family, friends, and colleagues believed in what she stood for and vowed to carry her legacy on through The Kneeland Project.

History
During the last month of her life, Carole helped this group develop the concept that would become The Kneeland Project. Within six months, individuals contributed nearly $100,000 in support, and The Kneeland Project’s first training program launched in October 1998.
The session immersed 18 selected journalists from around the country in a rigorous, three-day seminar in news ethics, writing, decision-making, management and leadership. This training has become the core focus of The Kneeland Project, and has evolved to address the dynamic and changing media landscape, while retaining the values, ethics, and fundamentals taught by Carole.
Our mission is “to assure ethics and excellence in local journalism.”
We have received recognition from the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization. Gifts may be made to the organization through cash, stocks, bonds, IRA directives, bequests, trusts and real property.
